Re-opened Good Friday 18 April 2003 On the previous Friday, 11 April, Karl Cooper, host of the morning programme on Radio Nottingham, announced that the world famous Caves of Nottingham would be re-opening to visitors on Good Friday. To celebrate this, he was inviting ten listeners to join him on the Monday, 14 April, in a special preview of them. As I was sitting right next to the telephone, and the number 0115=9343434 is well known, I was able to call in to the studio and was lucky enough to get through at the first attempt. A short time afterwards the station rang back to say that I was one of the lucky ten. Accordingly the chosen few met Karl just after 10.30 am on 14 April. Karl conducted interviews, recorded the commentaries by the guide, and also the background sound effects. There was also an amusing interlude where a 'tanner' welcomed us as prospective workers in his tannery. He said he would let us know! The recordings made were broadcast on the following day, Tues 15 April, just preceding the 8 am news. The first 17 pictures were taken on that preview visit The final four were on a second visit courtesy of the Nottingham Evening Post, which had a promotion for the 'City of Caves'.I visited again on Sat 19 April, and heard the A.R.P. Warden in the shelter. Pictures by john gurnhill Cameras: Fuji 6900 digital and Pentax 105R. Visit my main website www.jg4fun.co.uk ![]()
